was a photographer working in Japan from the mid-60s to the early 70s; he created images of Japanese men that had an evocativeness that were rare for his time, contrary to stereostypes, wholly masculine, contemporary and Japanese. In his short career he photographed constantly friends, bodybuilding competitions,
mens’ festivals and non-professional models, developing the photographs into three distinct bodies of work which were published as
Young Samurai, Naked Festival and
Otoko which was inspired by the photographer’s close friendship with novelist
Yukio Mishima. Born in Nishimoni, a suburb of Osaka, his birth's date is not certain (around 1924-1928), his death in 1973 cut an interesting career in the male photography. Young Samurai appeared in 1966, Otoko in 1972; Tomatsu worked as official photographer for the Japanese scenes in the epic film Tora Tora Tora. When he lost his lover of 14 years, he began a self-destructive life-style drinking too much and died of heart problems. Little of his negatives and prints remain, his books have never been reprinted.
