I Colt Studios sono stati fondati nel 1967

da Jim French,

già famoso fotografo di nudo (come Rip Colt) e illustratore. Inizialmente gli Studios erano soltanto un ufficio per vendere fotografie e disegni, solo in seguito French passa a fare video porno gay e diventa regista. Jim French nasce nel 1932, frequenta la Philadelphia Museum School of Art tra il 1950 e il '54; dal 1955 al '57 è arruolato nell' Esercito. Si stabilisce a New York e diventa illustratore con lo pseudonimo Arion prediligendo disegni omoerotici caratterizzate dal forte impatto romantico evitando il nudo frontale (molto in stile Varga), in seguito i disegni subisconono un sostanziale cambiamento, incentrandosi su temi decisamente più virili come motociclisti, cowboy, lottatori e altre figure legate al machismo. French, assieme al socio Lou Thomas, fonda i Colt Studios per produrre e vendere per posta fumetti, disegni e fotografie.

L' impresa ha successo; nel 1974 compra la quota del socio e trasferisce gli uffici della Colt in California. Inizia a realizzare fotografie di nudo maschile anche frontale diventando l'aziensa leader dell'erotismo maschile dopo l' AMG di Bob Mizer, vengono prodotti i primi film porno gay.

su calendari, riviste e libri fotografici fanno il giro del mondo. Nel 1999 la Colt entra in internet per evitare il fallimento e ritorna leader del settore. Jim si ritira nel 2003; questi sono alcuni disegni, riscoperti negli ultimi anni e rivalutati dalla critica.
