Cornelius McCarthy has been one of the leading artists of the male form. Born in 1935 in a catholic and Eastern European immigrant family, his earliest artistic influence was probably through the images of the Catholic devotion, later was influenced by Picasso, Andrè Derain and the Cubists; graduated at Goldsmith’s School of Art, London, McCarthy is regarded as a true master and is widely collected in England, Europe and the United States. His work combines naturalism with a stylized, almost cubist elements; his young men are strong and vulnerable at the same time. Retired in 1988, he moved with his partner to West Norfolk, died unexpectedly in November 2009.
