Bob Delmonteque was one of Douglas of Detroit's most popular models and a skilled photographer, his images are sometimes mistaken for the works of Douglas (see 1.9.11) becouse Delmonteque marketed other photographers' photographs of himself. Born on September 1919 in Alvin, Texas, when he was 20 appeared on a magazine cover as one of the most beautifully developed and strongest teens. Delmonteque became personal trainer of some Hollywood stars like John Wayne, Errol Flynn, Clark Gable and Marylin Monroe and the first athletes of the Apollo 11 program; due to his popularity appeared onto live shows from UK to US. Steve Wengryn è uno dei più famosi modelli beefcake degli anni '50. Nella sua lunga carriera è stato fotografato da molti (per non dire tutti) dei più importanti fotografi 'physique', AMG, Kris of Chicago, Lon of New York, Bruce of LA, Spartan, Al Urban, Capital Studio, Bob Delmonteque. Molti servizi fotografici erano in coppia con altre celebri modelli come Eddie Williams o Don Fuller. E' assolutamente divertente la foto nello stile indiani e cowboy di Bob Mizer, una classica ambientazione dove i modelli erano quasi nudi senza infrangere la censura. Con un buon intuito commerciale il famoso modello 'physique' Bob Delmonteque fece un accordo con Douglas Juleff (vedi 7.2.11) per posare gratuitamente in cambio della possibilità di vendere anche lui le fotografie ai collezionisti. Le pubblicità personali e le conseguenti grandi vendite attraverso tutti gli Stati Uniti lo arricchirono notevolemnte ma contribuirono anche a tenere viva la notorietà di Douglas of Detroit. Delmonteque è stato il modello più pubblicato in assoluto ma l'altrettanto celebre Vic Seipke (Mr Michigan 1951, Mr Junior America 1953, Masters Mr America 1976) è stato quello più venduto. Nonostante il ritiro forzato quando la maggior parte dell'archivio venne distrutto in una perquisizione della polizia alla fine degli anni '50, Douglas continuò a stampare e vendere copie delle fotografie che era riuscito a salvare fino agli anni '90. Molte di queste immagini sono state pubblicate nel volume a lui dedicato della serie "American Photography of the Male Nude 1940-1970". La salute di Juleff peggiorò notevolemnte negli ultimi anni della sua vita a causa di un ulcera duodenale e del diabete, una grave caduta in casa gli causò la frattura di due costole; venne ricoverato in ospedale dove, per complicazioni dovute al diabete, morì nel febbraio 1999. Nonostante l' assoluta importanza del suo lavoro non è ancora stata realizzata nessuna retrospettiva su Douglas of Detroit.With a good commercial insight, famous 'physique' model Bob Demonteque made an arrangement with Douglas Juleff (see also 2.7.11) to pose freely in exchange for negatives and sell his own prints to collectors. His own ads and personal sales across the United States made him earn a lot of money and helped keep Douglas of Detroit a great reputation. Delmonteque became Douglas' most published model of all time but the equally famous Vic Seipke (Mr Michigan 1951, Mr Junior America 1953, Masters Mr America 1976) was the best-selling one. Although he effectively retired when most part of his work was destroyed when the studio was ransacked by police at the end of the fifties, Douglas could print and sell his survivor works up to the 90's. Many of these prints have been published in 1998 in the series of volumes "American Photography of the Male Nude 1940-1970". Juleff's health deterioted considerably in his last years, duodenal ulcer and diabetes and a serious fall at home caused a couple of broken ribs. Recovered in hospital, he died in february 1999. No retrospective of his important work has yet been done.
