A new opportunity to admire once more the art of George Quaintance is the 2012 wall calendar. George Quaintance (see 7.24.11) was an artist ahead of his time, a man who forged several successful careers, yet never enjoyed mainstream fame. Quaintance, born in 1902 and died in 1957, lived and worked during an era when homosexuality was repressed, when his joyful paintings and his high-camp erotic art only existed in a demi-monde of borderline legality. George Quaintance was an artist ahead of his time, a man who forged several successful careers, yet never enjoyed mainstream fame. Only a few decades later, he could be today the fine artist he aspired to be; he always had to work in borderline legality. Born in 1902 in the rural village of Alma, Virginia, at eighteen he moved to New York to study painting at the Art Students League. He started to work for advertising agencies artist but at various points of his life George was a Vaudeville dancer, a famous hair designer, photographer and, for many years, the highly prized favored portraitist of Washington's smart set. In 1948 George moved to Los Angeles and specialized in painting and photographing physique models for popular physique magazines as Physique Pictorial, Demi-Gods, Body Beautiful, Your Physique. In the early 1950's, he set up a studio in Phoenix, Arizona, where created the figurative art he is best known for today. George Quaintance died of a heart attack in 1957, at the age of 55. His work has inspired a generation of artists like Tom of Finland, Harry Bush, Etienne and many others.

Bob Mizer lavorò per 48 anni facendo crescere di anno in anno la sua agenzia/casa di produzione di film e riviste "AMG", Athletic Model Guild. Verso la fine degli anni '50 Bob era già piuttosto ricco; la sua villetta con garage adibito a sala di posa divenne spesso il rifugio più o meno temporaneo per molti ragazzi che, attratti dal miraggio di Hollywood, tentarono la fortuna nel cinema accettando, nel frattempo, di posare nudi per lui. Bob, che ha sempre vissuto con la madre fino alla sua morte, venne più volte sospettato dalla polizia di essere l' organizzatore di un giro di prostituzione maschile, sospetti assolutamente infondati. "Physique Pictorial" del febbraio 1955 contiene illustrazioni di Bill Mac Lane e George Quaintance, fotografie di un grande atleta come Robert Duranton e di modelli ormai superstar physique come Forrester Millard e Jack Conant; marzo 1955 ha in copertina il disegno firmato misteriosamente 'Art Bob', all' interno troviamo i bellissimi Bud Counts, Keith Stephan, Ed Hayes; marzo '57 contiene altri disegni di George Quaintance e Etienne e fotografie dei tanti ragazzi in posing straps dalle illusioni infrante.
