George Quaintance was an artist ahead of his time, a man who forged several successful careers, yet never enjoyed mainstream fame. Only a few decades later, he could be today the fine artist he aspired to be; he always had to work in borderline legality. Born in 1902 in the rural village of Alma, Virginia, at eighteen he moved to New York to study painting at the Art Students League. He started to work for advertising agencies artist but at various points of his life George was a Vaudeville dancer, a famous hair designer, photographer and, for many years, the highly prized favored portraitist of Washington's smart set. In 1948 George moved to Los Angeles and specialized in painting and photographing physique models for popular physique magazines as Physique Pictorial, Demi-Gods, Body Beautiful, Your Physique. In the early 1950's, he set up a studio in Phoenix, Arizona, where created the figurative art he is best known for today. George Quaintance died of a heart attack in 1957, at the age of 55. His work has inspired a generation of artists like Tom of Finland, Harry Bush, Etienne and many others.
