Fromimmemorial time immemorial the Surma and Mursi tribes decorate their bodies. Surmas live in the Omo river valley in Ethiopia. The origins of these patterns are unknown, we only know that they haven't religious or ritual reasons. The pigments derive from volcanic rocks mixed with water. The design should be achieved quickly, with great spontaneity from head to toe, before the pigment is dried. The beautiful photographs by Hans Silvester, a German photographer who lives in southern France, are an excerpt from his really extraordinary books "Natural fashion: tribal decoration from Africa" published by Thames and Hudson in 2009, 168 pages, $ 29.95, and "Ethiopia : peoples of the Omo Valley "published by Harry N. Abrahams in 2007, 464 pages, $ 125. Hans Silvester is born in 1938 in Lorrach, Germany. Photoreporter since 1965 for the Rapho Agency has arrived to large success with a black and white reportage about Camargue horses in 1962.
