The Marlboro Man didn’t start out as a man, when the brand launched in the 1920s it was a woman’s cigarette.
The cowboy appeared later, precisely in 1954 because at the time filtered cigarettes were commonly considered for women and the evident aim was to conquer the male smokers,
and along with its image the popular phrase "Come to where the flavor is, come to Marlboro country" become familiar even to everybody. These ads go from 1956 to 2005. The first campaigns with the Marlboro Man were realized by Leo Burnett Agency; its art directors got inspiration by the slightly kitsch paintings of the American West painters Albert Bierstadt and
Frederic Remington. Many of the pictures have been shooted by celeb photographer Richard Prince.
